A sharp light pierces the eyes,
Leaving the vision a spotty white.
Its jagged surface distorting the tepid waters,
Convulsing the flow,
Blinding the fish.
The dominion of the light is harsh,
Devoid of the soft shade of trees and careworn umbrellas.
Its fluorescent rays leave all befouled,
Washing over every rackety subway station and deserted street corner.
Contempt for the many, pity for the few,
Leaves us with fleeting hours of the blissful dark,
Whose caress welcomes all,
And is a stranger to none.
